Baby on Board

Meet Dolly, who arrived at Arthur’s Acres late last night.

And this little girl has already lived one hell of a story.

A few months ago, someone driving on I-81 in Pennsylvania spotted a tiny white pig running in and out of traffic on the highway.

They pulled over, called a friend for help and literally began running interference with traffic while trying to catch her.

Dolly had fallen... or jumped from a transport truck. Pigs who survive this are called “truck jumpers.”

She was a farm piglet moving through the animal agriculture system. One minute she was on that truck. The next she was running for her life on I-81. Against some pretty unbelievable odds, she survived.

A chain of incredibly good humans eventually connected her with Short & Curlies Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, where she was quarantined, vetted, tested, spayed, vaccinated and cared for while they tried to figure out what came next for a farm pig who will eventually grow to 700+ pounds.

What came next was us. She is officially an Arthur’s Acres girl.

And because apparently the universe enjoys making us emotional… Dolly arrived on September 14.

September 16 is Wren and Joy’s rescue anniversary.

Wren and Joy survived being used as laboratory piglets before making their way to Arthur’s Acres, where they finally got to live the lives they should have had all along. We lost them both last year.

So their rescue anniversary feels different now. It’s bittersweet. We miss them terribly but September 16 is also a reminder of everything rescue gave them, years of safety, family, belly rubs, sunshine, favorite foods and the chance to simply be Wren and Joy.

And then, two days before that anniversary, this little white pig arrived at our door. Another girl who was never supposed to get a say in what happened to her. Another girl who somehow got out. And then we looked a little closer at her face.

One blue eye. One brown eye. Just like Wren.

Of all the little traits Dolly could have arrived here with, she shares this incredibly distinctive one with a girl we lost last year and she showed up just days before the anniversary of Wren and Joy finding freedom themselves.

I don’t know if you call that coincidence, kismet or Wren and Joy pulling a few strings from wherever they are… But it feels pretty damn special.

There will be SO much more Dolly coming your way as she settles in. For now, we wanted our Village to be among the first to know that there is officially one more little face at Arthur’s Acres.

As Dolly settles into sanctuary life, she’ll have the chance to grow up surrounded by safety, companionship and everything a pig deserves... room to root and explore, cozy places to sleep, fresh food, enrichment, belly rubs and a family that will care for her for the rest of her life.

In time, we’ll get to watch her personality unfold, see who she bonds with, learn all of her favorite things and watch this determined little piglet grow into one very big, very loved girl.

Welcome to the family, Dolly.

Peace, Love & Pigs.
