Meet Beatrice

Please welcome Beatrice to Arthur’s Acres.

Beatrice’s story is heartbreaking, complicated and still full of unknowns. Like many of our rescues, we do not know exactly where her life began, but we do know that for years, she was not given the life every pig deserves.

Before rescue, Beatrice spent five years confined to a small kitchen in a Queens, NY apartment. She was fed cat food, denied the kind of care pigs need, and from what we understand, had no access to the outdoors. For years, she was not seen as the intelligent, emotional, sensitive individual she is.

As the situation in her home became increasingly unstable, Beatrice was abandoned in the apartment. She was left behind in the chaos of a home that had already failed her.

Eventually, she was removed from that apartment by the estranged husband of the person who had been keeping her. Whatever the circumstances, it appears he was trying to get Beatrice somewhere safer. He placed her in a handmade wooden box that eerily resembled a coffin and left the city.

On a Saturday night in the July heat, Beatrice was dropped off unannounced at a home in the Western Catskills.

The person who found her had never met Beatrice before. She opened her door to find a frightened, unhealthy pig in a box by her home. And she immediately began searching for help.

Beatrice was scared, exhausted, unhealthy and had nowhere safe to go.

When the call for help went out, Rosemary Farm Sanctuary responded and came to Beatrice’s aid. With no pig experience but a deep commitment to getting her safe, they hooked up a horse trailer and went to rescue her.

When they arrived, the box Beatrice had been left in was falling apart. She was sluggish and depleted. Once inside the trailer, she collapsed from exhaustion. Her body seemed to finally understand that she no longer had to keep holding on alone.

With guidance from fellow rescuers, Beatrice’s first steps toward safety began. She touched grass. She grazed. She breathed fresh air. She began to experience the simple things that should never have been denied to her.

In August 2025, we went to meet Beatrice. We visited her and offered advice and guidance. At that time, we were not able to bring her to Arthur’s Acres but from the moment we met her, it felt like only a matter of time before she would find her way here.

And now, Beatrice is officially home at Arthur’s Acres.

Here, she will never be called “Bacon” her former name. She will never be treated like an inconvenience, a joke, or a meal. She will be known by her name. She will receive the medical care, patience, respect and lifelong commitment she has always deserved.

Beatrice’s rescue is a reminder of why this work matters and why rescue relationships matter. It takes people willing to answer the call, even when the situation is overwhelming, urgent, and heartbreaking. It also takes community, patience, and the shared belief that every life is worth fighting for.

Pigs are not objects. They are not punchlines. They are not food. They are individuals with feelings, needs, memories, fears, friendships and the ability to heal when finally given safety.

Beatrice has survived so much already. Now, her new life begins.
